The lines are clean and strong, with Jaguars reinvented trademark grill sitting aggressively in front of a long, chiselled bonnet. Our new XJ features the redesigned 3.0 litre, twin turbo, V6 diesel engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox incorporating Jaguars rotary gear selector and ‘Sequential Shift’ paddles. It produces 270bhp and 600NM of torque, giving acceleration from 0-60 in 6.0 seconds. This is going to be a fast car by any standards, but certainly for one with such luxury and space.

However, with an all aluminium body and chassis, Jaguar claim that it will give an average of 39mpg while producing incredibly low CO2 emissions of 189g/km. That makes it more environmentally friendly than almost any other large luxury car and more so than many much smaller ‘everyday’ type cars.

Refined power is only part of the story in a car such as this. When you are in a Jaguar you expect it to handle well in the corners, whilst also delivering superlative ride quality. The new XJ will deliver exactly what is required on all counts due to its mix of lightweight steel springs in the front suspension, self levelling air springs in the rear suspension and continuously variable magnetic dampers all round which adapt to speed, load and road conditions to ensure the optimum blend of poise and comfort.

Our new XJ is the top of the range, long wheelbase, ‘Portfolio’ version. This has 125mm more rear legroom than the standard model, which provides plenty of room for the 3 rear seat passengers to stretch out and relax while enjoying the class-leading ‘Bowers & Wilkins’ 1200 Watt, 20 speaker, premium surround sound system, featuring full ‘ipod’ connectivity and a DAB radio. This is controlled via an HD Touch-Screen, which also manages other functions, such as the four-zone automatic climate control, satellite navigation and the Bluetooth phone system. Overall, the interior is an elegant mix of sumptuous softgrain leather, deep carpets, Satin Elm wood veneer, plus front and rear seats that are both heated and cooled. All in all, a very special place to be.
